October 15 - "White Cane Day"

“White Cane Day” is held annually since 1964 to celebrate the white cane’s dual role of mobility tool and symbol for the visually impaired people. This year the Brasov Association of the Blind organizes a series of events meant to inform the general public about the white cane’s importance as an officially recognized symbol of the visually impaired people and about the real issues faced every day by their visually impaired fellow citizens.

“The main target of our White Cane Day actions is not represented by the visually impaired people, but by the other members of the society. We can use this opportunity to inform the people about the real daily issues faced by some of their fellow citizens, fellow citizens who usually walk unnoticed among them” stated Mr. Virgil Lazar, President of the Brasov Association of the Blind.

The white cane is not only a tool which allows an independent movement but is also a symbol representing the visually impaired people from our society.

“White Cane Day” pays a tribute to the many achievements of the visually impaired people, recognizing the white cane’s role in enhancing the independence of movement.

In order to maximize the impact of the actions during which the volunteers of the Brasov Association of the Blind will distribute informative materials to the people in the city’s central areas and to the institutions and organizations with an active role in the social protection and integration of visually impaired people, these actions were scheduled to October 16 and 17.

The actions organized for “White Cane Day” by the Brasov Association of the Blind are part of the larger Community Awareness Campaign started on June 30, 2006 with the launching of the “How to guide a blind person” booklet.
